The César Manrique Foundation is located in a beautiful home that César Manrique himself designed, upon his return from the United States.  The well-known artist had decided to settle permanently in Lanzarote and the house was his home for about twenty years.

It is situated in the middle of a lava flow that was the cause of the great eruptions that took place in Lanzarote between 1730 and 1736. A modern house that occupies 3,000 square meters in a property of more than 30,000. The house is the current headquarters of the César Manrique Foundation and surprises its visitors with its respect for the environment, as do many of its works on the island.  Do not miss the original fusion between the volcano and the architecture of the house.

CASA CÉSAR MANRIQUE – HARÍA

Another place that has become a must-see is the César Manrique House Museum. An original house that is located in the middle of an extraordinary palm grove in the village of Haría, in the north of the island. A picturesque village where the traditional way of life of the island is still preserved.

The artist César Manrique found in this village the tranquility he needed to work. The house arises from the reuse and adaptation of a ruined farmhouse in an agricultural estate that he had acquired in the seventies. The artist lived there until his death in 1992 and in 2013 it was opened to the public as the César Manrique House-Museum.

JAMEOS DEL AGUA – ARRIETA

Los Jameos del Agua is another of César Manrique’s works and another of the visits you cannot forget to make in Lanzarote. Located inside a volcanic tunnel that resulted from the eruptions of a volcano called Volcán de la Corona. The Jameos del Agua are in the section of the tunnel closest to the coast. This geological formation by the beautiful lake that exists in its interior, formed in its entirety thanks to marine filtrations. CUEVA DE LOS VERDES – HARÍA

The Cueva de los Verdes was also formed by the eruptive activity of the Corona Volcano.  This cave was used as a hiding place for the population against attacks and invasions by pirates from North Africa during the 16th and 17th centuries.

In the 19th century it was visited by travellers and scientists who were interested in the formation of this original cave. In the 1960s, the Cabildo of Lanzarote contacted the artist Jesús Soto, for the adaptation of this natural sanctuary of volcanic origin. Soto used the lights and shadows of the cave to enhance the whimsical forms that the lava had created and managed to create an incredible atmosphere.

WINE ROUTE IN LA GERIA

La Geria is known as the Lanzarote Wine Route and is located in the southwest of the island in the well-known municipality of Yaiza. At present it is a protected natural area that occupies an area of more than 5,000 hectares.

A large area of volcanic ash, from the eruption of Timanfaya in which it is surprising to see the cultivation of vines in holes dug out of the volcanic ash itself. La Geria is currently the largest area of vine cultivation on Lanzarote.
